File Extension Mkv

MKV is a file format used for video playback. It is one of three file formats in the Matroska Multimedia Container family. Founded in 2002 by programmer Steve Lhomme, the Matroska format takes its name from “matryoshka", the famous Russian ‘nesting dolls'. The three formats, MKV, MKA and MKS, are designed to combine an unlimited number of media files (video, audio, pictures and subtitles) into one, for a true multimedia experience in one file.

Testimonials

Regtask was able to clean up my computer and speed up the performance! I highly recommend it

Jo H.

My computer was always popping up with registry errors and I couldnt get rid of them. Regtask did the job for me and took less then 5 minutes to speed up my computer.

Samantha J.

I have to admit I'm no computer geek. When something goes wrong, I usually have to call someone to fix it and it costs me a lot of money. When my computer started to experience random freezes, I just used Regtask and now it works normally again.

David G.

My computer is 5 years old and runs extremely slow now. I was a bit sceptical about using Regtask, but just decided to give it a shot in the end and it worked out fantastically for me.

What sets MKV and Matroska Multimedia Container files in general apart from other media formats is that it was designed to be inclusive of as many media sources as possible. While other audio and video formats require specific encoding for compatibility, Matroska can combine files from a wide variety of sources. One of the many goals of the Matroska project is to create a widely available and easy to use format for creating high quality multimedia files, providing “DVD like” functions in one MKV file and supporting the highest video and audio quality currently available.

More Info Regarding File Extension Mkv

The MKV file format began its popularity in the Japanese animation fan community. Many of the shows and movies shared throughout the community were and still are only available in their original Japanese language, and the fans themselves provided the subtitles. These subtitles either had to be hard coded into the video file (a long and complicated process) or written into separate subtitle files. The MKV format allows the translators to put several language subtitles as well as DVD-like chapter breaks and audio dubbing when available (accessible through the menus of the popular PC and laptop media players) into one simple file, and more easily distributed.

MKV has since gained popularity for its ability and ease in which it handles high definition video. With HDTV quickly becoming a global standard and the release of the next generation video formats (HD DVD and Blu-Ray), the MKV format is also gaining popularity for the same reasons it was adopted by the Japanese animation fans: the ability to record and encode the highest quality video with a multitude of audio, video and subtitle options combined into a single file.

This rising popularity also means that there is a wide variety of applications, both software and hardware, which support the MKV format. Several standalone media players, including Chameleo, CorePlayer, DivX, Mplayer, VLC and xine, have native support for the MKV format and are available for Windows, Mac and other operating systems. These programs, when installed, will give you the option to ‘associate' media files to them, allowing for easy playback simply by clicking the file. They can also be opened from inside the programs themselves, and most have a drag and drop playlist function. Several Media Centers (operating systems designed specifically for media playback) also have MKV support, including MediaPortal, MythTV, Plex and PS3 Media Server.

Hardware manufacturers have been slower to adopt the MKV format, given that it has only recently reached a level of popularity to warrant its support. Texas Instruments was the first to provide a supporting chipset, and is currently used in the Cowon A3 portable media player. While the MKV format has yet to reach mainstream television set-top support, several original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) that utilize Sigma Designs chipsets have provided MKV support in some of their models, including Western Digital, Skydigital, TViX and Mediagate. Several other manufacturers have acknowledged and expressed interest in the MKV format and may release future versions of their hardware to support it.

The one drawback to Matroska's 'container' format is that if even one of the files within the MKV file is missing or damaged, it effects the playback of the entire file. These errors range from garbled audio and video, to unreadable or missing subtitles, to not being able to play the file at all. These errors most commonly occur when copying from a damaged source or data loss when transferring them. If such damage does occur, there are a couple of options to correct it. The first would be to obtain another copy of the MKV file, assuming that it isn't a corruption in the original source. There are also tools available to open and modify MKV files, making it possible to analyze and replace individual damaged files.
